Former Porto and Zenit St. Petersburg striker Hulk has revealed his long-time ambition to join Arsenal ahead of this summer’s transfer window.
The 30-year-old is currently plying his trade with Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG with whom he earns an eye-watering wage package of around £320,000 a week.
According to Metro, via Sport TV, the Brazilian has showcased his intention to move to England this summer with Arsene Wenger’s side being his preferred destination.
Hulk, who last appeared for Brazil at the 2016 Copa America Centenario, had been previously linked with a move to London rivals Chelsea before he opted for a mega-money switch to the Far East.
The former Zenit man is currently the fifth highest paid footballer in the world, but he is still said to have the desire to feature in England as he approaches the latter stages of his career.
“It’s always been a dream, it’s a very competitive championship and the stadiums are full in every game, no matter what the team, I always follow the league and I have always supported Arsenal,” he is quoted as saying on Metro, via Sport TV. “[I’m a fan of] Wenger’s way of playing, but unfortunately he has not won trophies in recent years.”
The Gunners are currently assessing the future of star forward Alexis Sanchez, whose contract is due to expire next summer, and this could urge them to move in for a new marksman ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.
Hulk, who made his name at ex-club Porto, due to his shooting and muscular physique, has refused to rule out a future move away from Shanghai despite having three years left on his contract.
“The city is very good, the club has a great culture and gives a lot of support. I have a contract for four years and have three left,” he added. “I am very happy, but nothing is impossible, especially in football.”
Arsenal have been overly reliant on Sanchez to produce the goods in the Premier League – 23 goals and 10 assists and his decision to move on could create a huge void in the frontline.
Hulk has not made his a huge impact in the Chinese Super League after an early season injury, and one would feel, he will struggle to adapt to English football following his decision to drop to a league of a lower standard.
