Player turned pundit Rio Ferdinand has claimed that he is still not convined that Arsenal have what it takes to win the Premier League this season.
The Gunners had a chance to go top of the League when they faced off against Tottenham on Sunday, but the Emirates club were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by their bitter local rivals.
Arsene Wenger’s men are now two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool heading into the international break.
Arsenal have made a stunning start to the season and haven’t lost a game since they were beaten at home by Liverpool on the opening day. The North London club are looking to end their Premier League drought this season, which they last won during their famous Invincibles season in 2003-04.
However, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand feels that the Emirates club still have work to do this season. Speaking to BT Sport on the post match show, he said:
I’m still not 100 per cent sure but they’re there or thereabouts.
Continuing with the likes of Sanchez and Ozil is great but I think they need more from other people as well, to come and back them two up.
The former Manchester United star further added that the Gunners fans should take heart from their 1-1 draw in the North London derby, because they just didn’t loose.
He added:
They didn’t lose – and I think that’s an important point to make because Arsenal teams over the years have got to this point, and the wheels have fallen off a little bit.
I think today they can take heart from not losing.
The Gunners have been impressive this season since the opening day and have yet to loose in any competition since. The defence has stabilized with the addition of Mustafi at the back and the attacking trio of Ozil, Sanchez and Walcott has blossomed up front. It has definitely been a treat to watch.
However, hasn’t this been the case during most of the seasons over the past decade. The Gunners always have a spell where they just seem unbeatable and suddenly they just drop off to end up somewhere around the top four.
This season too November seems tough with United and PSG games coming up. Spurs game should be a warning sign, that they should pick up their game against the big teams and hopefully they can continue to do well. Coming back to the title credentials, let’s see where we will be by January and then talk.
