Arsene Wenger has been linked with the England job. A lot of reports today are going around on the web saying that Football Association is expected to make Gareth Southgate the interim manager before Wenger takes over.
Gareth Southgate is currently managing the Under-21 England side which recently won the Toulon Tournament.
Southgate is a highly respected figure within the FA but was sacked by Middlesbrough after they got relegated from the premier league.
Hodgson handed his resignation after England went down to Iceland 1-2 that eliminated them from the European Championship.
The England captain had suggested he was “interested and excited to see who the new manager is” in the aftermath of the 2-1 defeat to Iceland.
“He needs to put his stamp on the team, whoever he is,” said Rooney. “I know one thing: if I was the manager coming in I’d be very excited. It’s difficult to see now, but we do have a good squad. Whoever comes in will have the players to move us on from where we are and take us one step further.”
FA’s vice-chairman, David Gill, will work with the technical director, Dan Ashworth, to identify a new manager, with Southgate, now in charge of the Under-21s, likely to be in charge when the senior side play their first World Cup qualifier in Slovakia in nine weeks’ time.
The FA would be prepared to wait for an ideal candidate to complete a contract elsewhere, with the interim overseeing the qualifiers for Russia 2018 in the meantime.
That has opened up the intriguing possibility of a pursuit of Wenger, who is entering the final year of his deal at Arsenal and ticks all the boxes for the FA.
This must sound great for an England fan. Wenger has got a fantastic understanding of the Premier League, of English players and of-course the English Media, So would you rule him out? Probably not. He might not want it.
First of all, if Wenger does take the job, there will be a huge amount of uncertainty this year. He’s under his last year of contract at Arsenal and if something goes wrong at Arsenal, there’ll be a huge ruckus in and around Wenger and the club with Media pulling all kind of stories and everything.
No way Wenger’s gonna take the job. He can go anywhere, maybe manage PSG or the French National side. Why would he want to take on that poisonous chalice that is the England job.
I just cannot see it happening. Sounds like a nice story but I think Arsene Wenger’ definitely gonna be staying at Arsenal for years to come.
