Arsenal make contact over £7.7m deal for Brazilian star

Douglas Santos

In recent weeks, Arsenal have been linked with Switzerland international Ricardo Rodriguez but no progress has been made on the deal so it seems Wenger is looking for alternatives.

The North London have already completed the signing of highly-rated midfielder Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach for a fee around £30–35 million, few weeks back.

The Gunners boss is reportedly planning to sign two more outfield players to reinforce the attack ahead of next season.

According to the reports from Daily Star, Arsenal have made an official contact with the Atletico Mineiro to discuss a potential deal to sign Douglas Santos.

Douglas, 22, departed from Udinese last season for Mineiro a deal worth £2.3m and has enjoyed a great season back in his homeland while also making his first appearance for the Brazil national team during a 2-0 win over Panama.

However, it seems the 22-year-old ace will be moving again this summer as it is being reported by Daily Star that Mineiro are ready to make a profit if someone meets their £7.7m asking price.

It is up to Wenger to decide whether he will pay that sort of money for the young defender but it was also reported that Arsenal are not the only team keeping tabs for the ace, as Barcelona and Valencia are also showing an interest.

In addition, it was also reported that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is keen to add some new names to his defence and is considering lure in Douglas.

Wenger will be advice to force a deal through fast before he loses him to his rivals. I’m sure this news will flash the mind of the Gunners fans to our formal Brazilian left-back named Santos but hopefully, Douglas will be a lot more successful at the Emirates Stadium than Santos did if he does end up joining the club.

I feel the Douglas deal is quite uncertain to happen and if Wenger is keen on signing a left-back then the Gunners should prefer going all out to get Rodriguez instead.

The Swiss international is undeniably talented and will be a good foil alongside the likes of Laurent Koscielny, nevertheless, we’ll have to wait and see what Wenger does.

However, I think we might have to wait a few more weeks before there will be any decision because Wenger might want to resolve Gibbs’ future before he makes any move for a replacement.
