Arsene Wenger has revealed that Olivier Giroud will lead Arsenal’s attack next season despite his inconsistency this season, according to the London Evening Standard.
The forward has come under intense criticism from the fans who had clamoured for his removal as the main striker of the club.
The 29-year-old ended a disappointing season netting four times in the Gunners last two fixtures after going 15 league games without a goal. He had failed to find the back of the net in the Premier League since the turn of the year until his equalizer against Manchester City last weekend and capped it up with a hat-trick against Aston Villa in the last game of the season.
And Arsenal failed bid to win the title has been blamed, partly, on his goal drought. Despite that, he has 16 league goals to his credit, making him the club’s top scorer. The France international was linked with German club Wolfsburg but it appears he still remains an integral part of Wenger’s plans for next
season.
The French coach also reiterated that a new striker will be brought in to bolster the attack due to Danny Welbeck’s lengthy spell on the sidelines which will keep him out for nine months.
Wenger replied “yes”, when asked by if Giroud would be the first-choice for the Gunners up front next season.
“I believe that Danny Welbeck being out now for a long, long time we will be on the road to look for one more striker”
“After that it’s down to compete. Olivier has strong and weak moments so we have to deal with that. “He is a bit unbelievable – he is in cycles. He scores in spells and then sometimes he scores less,” Wenger added.
Left to me I will sign another striker in the summer and make both Giroud and Danny welbeck the team’s second choice.
The former Manchester United forward welbeck joined the North London side in September 2014, but has already give way to injuries three times with a leg on each side of a minimum of two months each, and his yet to accomplish his full potential.
The Emirates outfits have already been linked with Juventus Alvaro Morata and Inter Milan Mauro Icardi.
Karim Benzema has also been link to a move to arsenal, who Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been targeting for a very long time after showing his true color at his club Real Madrid.
