Arsenal are reportedly growing confident of committing midfielder Aaron Ramsey to a new long-term deal.
The Wales international has just a year remaining on his existing contract, but The Telegraph claims that the club are close to rewarding him with a fresh four-year extension.
Ramsey’s future has come under question since the close of the previous campaign but talks appear to be progressing in the right route with the club’s hierarchy positive of rewarding him with a new contract.
The Welshman is presently on a package of £100,000-a-week but the new extension is likely to nearly double his salary which would put on level with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in terms of wages.
Ramsey has already revealed his excitement at working under new boss Unai Emery and there are suggestions that he could be handed the captain’s armband with Jack Wilshere having decided to leave at the expiry of his contract this month.
Arsenal have been pretty busy in pursuing new recruits despite the World Cup in full flow and of late, they are said to have secured a preliminary agreement for Sampdoria’s Lucas Torreira who is likely to undergo a medical in the near future.
Torreira’s arrival is likely to witness the Gunners adopt a 4-3-3 formation for the 2017/18 campaign and the Uruguayan will most probably slot into a holding midfield role with Aaron Ramsey and Granit Xhaka playing ahead of him.
With this, one of the attacking players may have to sacrificed to the bench and it will be interesting to see what plans Emery has in store in his debut season at the Emirates.
