The deal to bring Lucas Torreira to Arsenal is one of the worst kept secrets as far as fans are concerned. And to add fuel to the fire, the player when asked about the club, said:
“Yes I know Arsenal is a good team – one of the biggest in the world – but right now I am wearing the shirt of my country and my focus is the national team.
“After the tournament is over it will all be clear but I am not looking at that moment yet.
“Now I am just feeling very good and very happy for the victory. I am happy for the moment the team is having as a group after getting to the next round.”
This talk has come after the president of the former club of Torreira, Sampdoria, appeared to confirm the £26m deal a few days ago. The involvement of the player in the World Cup is the only thing that is said to be holding up the announcement of the deal.
He has appeared as a substitute in both the matches that Uruguay have played so far against Egypt and Saudi Arabia. In the short time that he has been on the pitch, he has shown glimpses of his talent that Arsenal fans around the world will be itching to see on the Emirates pitch as well.
When the signing is made official, Torreira will be further proof of the restructuring that is going on at Arsenal under new manager Unai Emery. Two players have already been confirmed to join in the form of Stephan Lichsteiner from Juventus and Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen.
Arsenal need reinforcements in both the midfield as well as the defense and this is where bringing in a player like Torreira will add some much needed quality to the middle of the park.
It is predicted that the announcement by the Gunners will be made once the participation of Uruguay in the World Cup is over but given the fact that they have progressed to the Round of 16 means that Arsenal fans will have to wait a little bit longer to see Torreira wearing the Red and White.
