Arsenal’s French international right-back Mathieu Debuchy is reportedly wanted by Spanish La Liga side Espanyol on a season-long loan.
The 31-year old defender is desperate to leave the Emirates stadium after being pushed to the second choice by 21-year old Spanish right-back Hector Bellerin and the Gunners are ready to grant his wish either with a permanent deal or a season-long loan.
However, Debuchy reportedly has a minor calf problem and that is why he has been unable to negotiate a proper deal this summer transfer window so far.
Italian Serie A club Inter and Espanyol are considering a late deadline day move for the Arsenal defender, according to various reliable reports.
Italian news outlet Tuttosport claims that Inter has placed the Frenchman on their shortlist of full-backs, while the Daily Mirror report that Espanyol, who are now managed by Premier League club Watford’s former Spanish boss Quique Sanchez Flores, are also exploring the possibility of a potential Debuchy deal.
Inter’s quest to find some decent full-backs this summer continues, as new club manager Dutchman Frank de Boer, continues his quest to lead the blue half of Milan back to their success days. However, with Espanyol now keenly interested in the Frenchman, Inter might be in some spot of bother.
Espanyol has leaked in eight goals in their opening two La Liga games this and Quique Sánchez Flores hopes that Debuchy will be able to help strengthen up their backline.
Debuchy moved to the Emirates stadium from fellow Premier League club Newcastle United during the summer of 2014 for £12million. The 31-year-old has featured in just 22 games for the Gunners since his move from Tyne side in 2014, spending the second half of last season on loan at French Ligue 1 club Bordeaux. He is under contract with Arsenal FC until June 2019.
But he has not featured in a competitive game for the north London side since January. Now with English right-back Carl Jenkinson also in the line to fight for places, Debuchy’s Arsenal future hangs in the balance.
Hence Debuchy could follow Calum Chambers out of the Emirates after the English defender joined Middlesbrough on loan yesterday. Let us hope that both the club and Debuchy come to a reasonable agreement regarding his reported move as he still has a lot of club years as well as international footballing years left in him.
