It appears that the much anticipated transfer of midfield ace Thomas Lemar is now off. There have been multiple reports that the player reportedly agreed terms with the Gunners but it seems both clubs could not agree on the fee.
Wenger was desperate to bolster the squad this season with the Frenchman but has now accepted that unless there is a late change of heart he will remain without his services.
Arsenal have been linked to a number of players already, enough to field a team comprised solely of midfielders but they are still on the hunt for one more key signing.
As I understand it, it may go to the wire on transfer day but Wenger believes he can secure at least one more player to add depth and competition in the middle.
As always the Arsenal boss is keeping his cards close to his chest refusing to divulge any details but he is strongly considering Madrid star Marco Asensio before the window shuts and might look to persuade Lemar to join in January.
Asensio may be easier to coax away but ultimately more costly, it’s rumoured that Madrid won’t even begin to negotiate unless £70 Million is an opening offer and who can blame them in the current market.
Could Asensio be a late addition?
Asensio is a rising star in World football and one that Wenger has had an eye on for a while but whilst he can not get regular games at Madrid, he still has the chance of Champions league football with Madrid.
On the flip side, he is a huge admirer of Mesut Ozil and would relish the chance to play alongside the German playmaker but with the constant speculation over the midfielder’s future, it’s hardly a stable situation and not one worth leaving Madrid or Zidane for.
Wenger however, is undeterred and is said to be pushing for the deal before close of business.
It’s understood that the Arsenal boss had submitted a list of key players and the club is working overtime to secure the services of one of them.
Wenger isn’t stupid, even though he looked chirpy enough after the Leicester game where Arsenal pretty much stole all 3 points against the odds, there was evidence to suggest a prompt push for reinforcements.
However, fans are convinced that Wenger has hidden the keys to his wallet under the floorboards and that if he was going to sign another player, they would have joined already.
Don’t be so sure.
