It’s been a tough week for Arsenal after their disastrous defeat to Monaco in the first leg of Champions League round of 16, but the latest financial figures announced by Arsenal will bring some much needed cheer to the fans as the Gunners are likely to have £50 million to spend in the summer.
The North London Club have announced cash reserves of £138.8 million despite a record spending of £100 million in the past year or so. The new found financial firepower is notably down to their new Emirates shirt deal and kit sponsorship with Puma, however the figures doesn’t include the winter signings of Bielik and Gabriel.
The Gunners have so far struggled with consistency this season and their lack of quality in some areas have costed them dearly. With some injection of cash expected in the summer, it’s time to fill up those gaps with some quality and make the team fool proof. Let’s have a look on which positions need changes.
We have struggled in the past decade or so to find two top class keepers and the situation is no different now. Ospina has been good so far, but looked tentative against big teams while Szczesny always had the talent only to be overshadowed by his disciplinary issues. It’s not that we definitely need a new world class keeper, however if we have any more cash resources remaining after fixing other positions which need more attention.
Coming to the defence, we have some good talent there with the likes of Koscielny, Chambers, Bellerin, Debuchy and Gibbs. However the likes of Mertesacker and Monreal aren’t really the quality that we need to have to get back to our glory days. Many might argue with me on naming the German, although he is a good player he isn’t someone on whom we can rely against big and pacy teams, so bringing another defender should also be on the priority list.
The most likely position that we are gonna sign someone is the defensive midfield where Coquelin has impressed so far, but having a more physical and experienced name will help the youngster grow while giving Arsenal the much needed shield in front of defence. In attack, we are almost there and all we need is a more prolific striker who can run past the defenders and provide the cutting edge in front of the goal.
Giroud has been very good this season but again he doesn’t perform in the big games which isn’t what top class strikers do. The priority definitely is to get a defensive midfielder, striker, defender and if possible a goal keeper too, but looking at the available budget, I don’t think we can fill all the positions so the it would be better if Wenger can cover for the defensive positions in the window.
The pressure is building on Wenger, so it’s time for the boss to get into the market and add the missing puzzles that can make us a world class team again.
Who should Wenger sign in the summer?
