Many fans are still reeling from David Ornstein’s announcement that Unai Emery will take over as the new manager of Arsenal.
The club are expected to announce the ex-PSG and Sevilla manager later this week. With this in mind, The Sun is reporting that the Spanish manager will build his new squad around forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Midfielder Aaron Ramsey.
The Sun, known for it’s dubious reporting, also stated that Mesut Ozil, previously one of Arsene Wenger’s favourite players who had a solid place in the team despite inconsistent performances, may be concerned for his place in the team.
The German playmaker has signed a new contract with the gunners in January which made him the highest paid player at the club on a huge £350,000-a-week. The report also claims that the board were amazed by Emery’s forensic analysis of every Arsenal player along with his proposed methods on how to improve players individually.
The Sun’s source inside the club said this about the soon-to-be manager’s pitch to the board:
“He knew more about the Arsenal squad and every relevant detail about their career path and injury histories than people who had been at the club for years… They’d no idea where he had gathered his information but they were mesmerised by the vision he put before them.”
This account of Emery will surely change the minds of some of the more skeptical among the fanbase. Fans are still divided over Emery’s selection, with one fan writing on Twitter that Arsenal had ‘downgraded’ from Arsene Wenger.
Other fans believe that Unai Emery presents the best of both worlds, with a huge amount of experience winning a French league title and also winning three consecutive Europa League trophies with Sevilla, but also being only 46, fairly young for a manager.
It will be interesting to see how Emery will change the squad Arsene Wenger left behind. Only time will tell if it will change for the better.
