The atmosphere around the Emirates Stadium is no friendlier for the man who is, unarguably the most successful manager at the club. Arsene Wenger, in recent years, has seen his once loving fans calling for his head. The call to get him replaced or for him to resign is really tense at the moment. It seems the fans have lost their patience with him out at all cost.
Winning the FA Cup in the last two seasons has failed to turn the tide in his favour. But rather the inability to lay his hands on both the Premier League and Champions League titles for over a decade now looks like the more pronounced reason for wanting him out of the club.
Arsenal have never tasted Champions League glory and the closest we came to was the 2006 defeat to Barcelona in the final and we watched helplessly as our London rival won the cup in 2012.
Wenger broke the club transfer record with the signing of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez from Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively to bolster the squad. This has not brought the desired result as the Premier League continue to elude us each season since the invincible era that won it in 2004.
Arsenal fans have already revealed the very one desired at the club next season. The reasons could not be farfetched as his records speak for him.
Diego Simeone has been able to turn Atletico Madrid from a mid-table club to a Champions League contender since joining them in December 23, 2011 and most of the fans have taken to social media to clamour for the Argentine. Simeone won the Europa League in his first season with the Spanish club and followed it up by defeating Chelsea 4-1 in the UEFA Super Cup.
He won the Copa del Rey in 2013 abed capped it with the La Liga title the following season, their first since 1996. He led the club to the first ever Champions League final after defeating Arsenal’s nemesis, Barcelona en-route to the final before losing to the eventual winner, Real Madrid. They were the only undefeated club in the competition that season- winning nine and drawing three.
Another victory over Barca. (3-1 agg.) in the quarter-final and a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of the semi-final in Champions League are parts of the records that has made him warm his way to them heart of the Gooners.
Separated only by goal difference, Atletico are on the same point with leader Barca. (82) on the La Liga table this season. And defensively, the club can boast of 135 clean sheets in 256 games under the former River Plate coach. It will be difficult for Atletico Madrid to part with the man that done so much for them. But in the world of football, the unexpected always happens.
