Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell told Ladbrokes(via Daily Star) that the Gunners should look to sign Wolves defender Conor Coady.
The 28-year-old has been a rock in defence for the Wanderers and after another successful season, the defender was named in the preliminary England squad for Euro 2020.
Campbell who was attending the launch of Ladbrokes’ new European 5-A-Side Bet Championship, spoke about the Wolves centre-back. He said:
“There’s a lot of players out there who can fit the Arsenal mould. Conor Coady is a good player. He’s at a good club now in Wolves, but he’s actually someone I’d be looking at for Arsenal this summer.”
The former Invincible also touched upon Coady’s skills and the quality he brings to any team, as he added:
“He’s comfortable on the ball and he’s a winner. He’s definitely got the kind of mentality Arsenal should be looking at in new players.
“Coady’s someone they should look at because he’s so solid, he wants to defend. He can pass as well, he’s quick, he’s strong and he’s good in the air. He’s a good all-rounder and he’s got a great attitude as well and I like that.”
Arsenal Fever View:
After the departure of David Luiz, the north Londoners will have to take a call on whether they need another right-footed centre-back. They have a couple of options in Rob Holding and young William Saliba but could benefit from signing the Wolves captain.
This potential signing will also give manager Mikel Arteta the chance to switch between a back three and a back four. The 28-year-old centre-back is good in the air and has an excellent passing range much like Luiz.
Given the wealth of options the Gunners have in defence, another centre back might not be a priority. But as Campbell said, the Wolves man is a quality player who will improve the defence at the Emirates.
Arsenal would benefit more from strengthening other positions that improve the overall quality of the squad. Coady is a terrific player and a leader in defence but isn’t exactly what the Emirates club need right now.
