Arsenal are closing in on Bernd Leno signing, claims Sky Sports journalist

Bernd Leno

It is looking very likely that new Arsenal manager Unai Emery will bring a new goalkeeper to the Emirates this summer.

Now, it is looking even more likely that Bayer Leverkusen’s Bernd Leno will be joining the North London club this summer.

The German international has been impressive in the Bundesliga and standing at 6’2, could be a brilliant addition to Arsenal’s squad.

Recently German outlet SportBild have claimed that a £22m deal has been reached between both clubs and it may only be a matter of time before an announcement is made.

Now Sky Sports reporter journalist Romano has also confirmed that Leno is getting closer to Arsenal and currently talks are ongoing.

Here is the tweet: “And also Leno is getting closer to Arsenal! Talks ongoing.”

The goalkeeper kept 12 clean sheets last season and the sporting director at Leverkusen has told German outlet Bild: “Leno can leave but only on our terms.

“We are still in constant and open exchange with Bernd and his manager.

“Leno already had a concrete offer from Napoli in 2017, but we didn’t have an equivalent backup at the time.

“He had to stay and he did really well last season, but we thought Bernd’s desire to leave would resurface and so with the arrival of Lukas Hradecky, we have a high-quality successor.”

With these strong words from the director, it looks like Leverkusen are ready to sell Leno if the right offer comes in. The deal looks to be worth around £22m.

If Bernd Leno joins Arsenal, he will have to be the first choice goalkeeper for the Emirates club, prompting a move for current starter Petr Cech.

The Daily Star reports that Cech is heavily linked with a move to Napoli this summer. The veteran keeper has had a mixed season for the Gunners, retaining a high quality for the majority of the season yet making some high profile errors leading to goals.

It is believed Emery wants a younger player in goal as opposed to 36-year-old Cech.
