According to Sky Sports, Arsenal’s assumed captain of 2016/17 and vice-captain of 2015/16 Per Mertesacker is set to miss up to 5 months after suffering a knee injury in his first pre-season friendly against RC Lens which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Arsene Wenger is set to make an announcement about Per Mertesacker at a press conference in the next 48 hours.
He has been left out of the squad for the coming pre-season tour of USA and losing the 31-year-old represents a serious setback for Arsene Wenger.
It is absolutely essential that Arsenal get in a center back in the transfer window as Laurent Koscielny won’t be back anytime soon and Gabriel is already out of the America tour due to tonsillitis but he is expected to be fit for the start of the season.
Wenger is normally reluctant to rush players into action after a major tournament but this may force him to play Koscielny for their first game of the season against Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on August 14.
Right now the only alternatives for BFG are Calum Chambers and new signing Rob Holding and this injury may force Arsene Wenger to play them in the coming USA and Scandinavia tours.
The Gunners play MLS All-Stars in San Jose on Thursday and Chivas de Guadalajara in Los Angeles on Sunday. Let’s see if the new signing Rob Holding is ready for first-team football here at Arsenal.
Arsenal have been linked with the likes of Shkodran Mustafi, Jeison Murillo, Kalidou Koulibaly and the prodigal son Thomas Vermaelen as reports are linking him with a move back to Arsenal.
It is absolutely necessary to sign a center back as soon as possible with injury to Per Mertesacker as it looks like he’ll be out for 5 months.
There are many options available right now in the transfer market. Let’s see who comes now as we haven’t signed a decent defender for years.
