Highly ambitious Parisian giants, PSG, are reportedly chasing long standing Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s coveted signature, according to The Sun.
The 67 year old manager is the longest serving gaffer in the North London club’s history, having spent twenty years at the helm. Only Alex Ferguson at Manchester United has worked longer in the Epl.
Arsene has of late borne the brunt of sharp criticism after the club lost ground to rampaging Chelsea at the top of the table. Many pundits have questioned the French manager’s ability to rally his troops enough to mount a sustained onslaught towards the title.
Arsenal has been roundly condemned for capitulating at Goodison Park and at Manchester City, underlining their perennial inability to beat top four top rivals, a factor hindering their ascendance to the throne.
The report states that Wenger’s £160,000-a-week contract expires at the end of the season and the club’s directors are still in the dark as to the manager’s future plans.
Whilst Arsenal’s trophy cabinet has been barren for the last decade, Wenger is credited for having revolutionised the way soccer is managed in England and paving the way for other continental coaches.
Having won doubles in 1998 and 2002 , Arsene crowned it all by leading the invincibles to an imperious and historic undefeated march to the title in the 2003/04 season.
Arsenal supremo, Ivan Gazidis, has come out in full force, supporting the beleaguered team. In his latest update to the shareholders Gazidis said(as per Goal.com)
” …I’m confident the squad will bounce back strongly and we have the chance to get back on track over the busy Christmas period.
The race for the premier league will go right to the end with several clubs competing for the title…”
Arsene Wenger enjoys total boardroom support and is more likely to pen one more year extension.
The boardroom’s support is not only seen as an all round appreciation of Arsene’s contribution to the club but also an assurance of the club’s faith in the gaffer going forward.
PSG ‘S Qattari owners have openly courted Wenger over a long time but have fallen flat on their faces in their previous two attempts to price him away from the Emirates.
This time they are reportedly offering a tidy £10 million annual package for the ageing “professor”. They are also prepared to back Wenger with tranfer funds to help him build a formidable team to conquer Europe.
Arsene’s contract expires this summer and a contract extension is still to be finalised. PSG’s relentless pursuit may yet yield results this time around.
Until later folks….
