Newcastle are considering a loan move for Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January with an option to buy for £20million in the summer, as per reports in Mirror.
The 32-year-old joined the Gunners back in 2018 for a then club-record fee of £56million from Borussia Dortmund. Since joining, he has been the club’s talisman, scoring 92 goals in 163 appearances.
However, the Gabonese international had a huge dip in form last season as he struggled to be clinical in front of the goal. The striker’s woes have continued this term. He has managed to score just seven goals across all competitions.
The forward was also stripped of the captaincy due to disciplinary issues and has been left out of the squad. The Arsenal outcast has been attracting interest from several clubs, with Newcastle being the latest club looking to take him away from north London.
According to The Mirror, Newcastle are currently in talks with Arsenal for a loan deal in January with an option to buy for £20million in the summer transfer window. The Magpies currently sit 19th in the Premier League table with just one win. They look to bolster their attacking options by securing the 32-year-old’s services in an attempt to stay in English football’s top-tier next season.
Arsenal Fever View:
Aubameyang has failed to impress for the second season in a row. His finishing has been underwhelming and doesn’t offer any threat to the opposition when leading the attack. He has been a shadow of his former self since signing that lucrative contract extension last season.
The Gabon international, who is away on AFCON duty, has been frozen out of the squad for an alleged breach of discipline and took no part since. The Gunners in his absence have made great strides in their hunt for a top-four spot.
It seems unlikely that the star will play for Arsenal again. With Alexandre Lacazette’s and Eddie Nketia’s futures at the club uncertain, signing a striker is a paramount task.
Arsenal suffered a heartbreaking loss against Manchester City on Saturday after the visitors clinched a stoppage-time winner. Despite the loss, the Gunners showcased a scintillating performance. They wouldn’t dwell on this result for too long as another challenging fixture awaits them as they take on Liverpool on Thursday night in the semi-final of the EFL Cup.
