Arsenal defender William Saliba will be given a chance to impress regardless of the club’s pursuit of Ben White as per a report from the Express.
The Frenchman spent the second half of the season on loan at Nice and impressed with a string of good performances. But the north Londoners have been linked with the Brighton and Hove Albion defender who plays in a similar position.
According to Express, Saliba will be given a chance to showcase his talent during the pre-season games despite the potential arrival of White. The Athletic recently reported that the north Londoners are preparing a move for the Englishman, who will cost around £40-50m.
The departure of David Luiz has left a hole to be plugged in the team and when Mikel Arteta was asked about a replacement for the Brazilian, he was quoted as saying:
“You will see in the summer, the possible replacement. William is our player for sure and that’s the decision we’re going to be taking soon.”
Arsenal Fever View:
After being signed in the summer of 2019, the youngster was sent back to Saint Etienne on loan. When the defender arrived back in England at the beginning of the 2020/21 season, he was expected to be part of the Gunners team.
But it was decided that he was not ready to be involved in the first team and was sent out on loan once again. To Saliba’s credit, the Frenchman showed his full range of skills at Nice and helped them to a respectable finish.
This pre-season could be a make-or-break period for the 20-year-old. He should focus on showing Arteta what he is made of as that can impact the youngster’s future at the Emirates.
Given how much was spent on the centre-back, it will be a bit strange if he is not given a chance to impress. The Gunners interest in White indicates that they want another solid option in defence.
If Arsenal sign the Brighton defender, they would be adding an excellent talent to their ranks and one that improves the team. But it may not necessarily be at the expense of Saliba.
