Mikel Arteta confirms new staff appointment at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta

Speaking ahead of the Rangers game, Mikel Arteta confirmed that Arsenal have appointed a new set-piece coach in Nicolas Jover.

The Gunners had one of the best defence in the league last season and a major reason behind that was the team’s ability to defend corners and free kicks. This was down to the presence of Andreas Georgson who has since left north London.

That led Arsenal to look for a new coach to take care of set-pieces and they landed the Manchester City man. Both Arteta and Jover worked together at City at the beginning of the 2019/20 season, before the Spaniard succeeded Unai Emery at Arsenal.

Speaking on the departure of Georgson and the appointment of Jover, Arteta told the club’s website:

“Yeah, we had a situation in the summer with Andreas [Georgson], where he had the possibility to leave to his country. He had different reasons to do that, and I understood that situation, so we needed to recruit somebody.

“After looking through what the best solution would be, a person that I know was on the market, was available, is someone whose expertise are incredibly useful and valuable for us. He’s joining us. His name is Nicolas Jover and I’ve worked with him before at City.”

With the departure of Georgson, it was important that the Gunners found someone to take over from him and it is good that they managed to find a quick solution. Set-pieces are an important part of any club’s identity, and the north Londoners need to continue their good record.

One aspect that Jover will have to work with is trying to find ways in which Arteta’s men can score more from these situations. They are very good at defending a corner or a freekick but taking advantage of them is a problem. If the former City coach can help improve this, his appointment will surely be a success.

Apart from the changes that happen on the pitch, it is good to know that Arsenal are taking care of their backroom staff as well. Time will tell us how well Jover is going to do and hopefully, it will lead to a positive impact.
