After Arsenal announced that Unai Emery would be leaving, there has been a lot of speculation as to who the next person will be. Right now, the club has put former invincible Freddie Ljungberg as the caretaker manager.
One of the men that has been mentioned as a possibility is current Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers. But when he was asked about the vacant Arsenal job, he made his feelings pretty clear. According to Metro, he said:
“Yeah, the message is clear and it has been and probably I’ll get asked again until they appoint someone, but it’s very simple. I’m very happy here.
“The purpose was very clear in that I wanted to help this club move forward and looking to lead it forward with a group I feel has huge potential. ‘Why would I want to move from that?”
He makes it sound very clear that he is not interested in making the jump from the Foxes. Perhaps the way he made his move from Celtic to Leicester in the middle of last season could be why the Arsenal hierarchy were looking at him in the first place.
But that would be quite a jump at this stage of the season for Rodgers to leave the 2nd place team, to move to one where they are struggling to win. Regardless of what the motives may be, the truth is that Rodgers would be an excellent appointment for the Gunners.
He has proven himself in the Premier League with Liverpool and now in even more impressive fashion with Leicester City. He will be able to play the style of football that became synonymous with the club during the reign of Arsene Wenger.
The football that the North London club play these days can only be described as being dull. Also, the club will have to factor in what they want to Freddie Ljungberg who has to be given some time to put his stamp on the club.
It will be difficult for Arsenal to make Rodgers jump ship at this stage of the season. But if they were somehow able to achieve this, it will be a major statement of intent.
