Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has provided an update on the ongoing gossip regarding his future.
The England international was supposed to sign a new deal prior to the turn of the year, but talks have not progressed as planned.
Following the Milan win on Thursday night, Wilshere was quizzed about his future at the Emirates Stadium, and he happened to suggest that there has no process with regards to a new contract, he said:
“Things have changed since then. We’re no closer to sorting anything out.”
Wilshere was more or less a fringe player during the early exchanges of the campaign as he found behind the likes of Granit Xhaka, Aaron Ramsey and at times, Mohamed Elneny in the pecking order for the Premier League duties.
However, a hamstring issue to Ramsey during the festive period allowed him to have an extended run at the heart of the midfield, and he has since cemented his position in the lineup, with Arsene Wenger opting to go with the combination of him, Ramsey and Xhaka in the first-XI.
Wilshere’s shear work-rate and passion on the playing field is clearly visible in every Gunners game, but the club’s hierarchy are still reluctant to offer him a contract on his current £110,000-a-week wages.
The Stevenage-born ace has had multiple injury concerns over the past few years, and reports are suggesting that the Gunners’ hierarchy are only prepared to place him on £90,000-a-week, though there are incentives included, which may close the difference to his present basic.
Wilshere’s existing deal will expire in less than three months, and it will be interesting to see how the discussions pave way, with Arsenal risking the possibility of losing another player to a direct league rival.
