Young Arsenal forward Stephy Mavididi was left in tears after his season was brought to an end due to a hamstring problem. The teenager sustained the gruesome injury while playing on loan at Charlton against Shrewsbury last night.
Mavididi, 18, made his switch to the Addicks during the winter transfer window in order to progress further with some valuable first-team experience.
The youngster has not scored in any of his outings with the League One outfit, but his sublime run through the length of the pitch against several Rochdale players went viral last month.
Addicks boss Karl Robinson had recently heaped praise on the impact Mavididi had on his side, but this appears to have turned into a curse with the England Under-19 international sidelined through injury for at least four months.
Mavididi tore his hamstring during Charlton’s 1-0 loss to Bury, and scans have confirmed that he will need a surgery which has left the youngster inconsolable.
Robinson did admit he had overused Mavididi just after his injury, but he is still hopeful of retaining the player on a temporary basis once he returns back to full fitness next season.
According to London News, he said:
“It’s going to be 14-16 weeks,” Robinson was quoted as saying on Metro.
“Hopefully he’ll have an operation by the end of the week, it’s come away from the bone we think. The kid was in tears this morning on the phone to me. The overriding emotion from that was sickening. The kid’s been tremendous for us.
“We wish Stephy the quickest recovery possible. He’s a credit to his family, a credit to Arsenal FC.
“I’d hope to have him back next year but that’s in the hands of Arsenal.”
Mavididi was the Gunners under-21s’ top scorer last term as Steve Gatting’s side earned promotion to the Division One, and we hope that he makes a quick recovery to represent the reserve side at some stage next season.
Hopefully the youngster will return stronger.
