“He’s in contact with Arsenal”, Germany legend Lothar Matthaus makes huge claim

Arsene Wenger

German legend Lothar Matthaus has revealed that Thomas Tuchel is in contact with Arsenal regarding the head coach role.

The Gunners have endured another average season in the Premier League, and the club’s hierarchy are said to be mulling over the prospect of ending their long-term association with manager Arsene Wenger.

Speaking to SportBild, Matthaus, who was a World Cup winner with Germany in 1990, claimed that Tuchel is in communication with the Gunners ahead of a potential managerial change during the summer, he said:

“I think Thomas Tuchel could be the favourite. But I also know that he’s in contact with Arsenal.”

Obviously, any change in the management may depend on the final outcome of the Gunners season.

The club are facing the prospect of missing the Champions League football once more after falling 13 points behind Tottenham Hotspur in the top-four hunt, but there is still Europa League campaign to look upon.

The North London club progressed to the quarter-final of the Europa League after beating AC Milan in the round-of-16 stage, and winning the competition in May would assure the club of a back-door entry into the Champions League, something which Manchester United did last term.

Should this be the case, Wenger is likely to stick with the side for the final year of his existing deal which would prolong the need for a successor until June 2019.

Arsenal return to League action with a home fixture against Stoke City next weekend before they prepare to host CSKA Moscow in the Europa League quarter-final first-leg.
