Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka will reportedly complete his move to AS Roma next week, as per journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Swiss international has been an integral part of the north London club since making the move from Borussia Monchengladbach. Over the past five seasons, he made 220 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals and assisting 18 times.
The 28-year-old was linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium last season, following a spat involving the midfielder and the fans. However, talks never materialised and Xhaka remained at the club. He had a decent campaign this past year, with Arteta calling him a ‘phenomenal’ player.
While speaking to The Arsenal Lounge, Romano revealed that both the clubs are very close to an agreement and the transfer might be concluded next week. He said:
“Agreement is really really close, but it’s not done yet. It’s just a matter of details because the player wants to go to Roma and what I’m told is, Arsenal told him some months ago that if the right proposal is arriving he is free to leave the club.
“It’s time for him to join Roma and I think next week its gonna happen.”
Italian outlet Sport Mediaset also claim that a deal is close and the transfer will go through once Switzerland end their Euro 2020 campaign.
Arsenal Fever View:
Arsenal are looking to reshape their midfield this summer. Dani Ceballos and Martin Odegaard have already returned to Real Madrid and Granit Xhaka is another name who is heading towards the exit door.
The midfielder has been a decent success but has often struggled with consistency. It would be the right time to bring in a new personality in midfield, as the club have often struggled to find the right combination in the centre which also contributed to their struggles over the past few years.
Selling Granit Xhaka and investing the money in other areas could be a good decision. Arsenal are linked with a move for Albert Sambi Lokonga who will be a younger and more athletic replacement for the Swiss international. The Gunners boss might miss the leadership qualities of the 28-year-old, but this might be a good divorce for both parties.
