Former Arsenal captain who is currently an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, is one of the names that is in the running for the manager’s post at the Emirates.
The Spaniard was also one of the leading candidates to take over from Arsene Wenger but the board preferred Unai Emery at the time. Now, we finally know what his stance is on returning to the club.
As per the Daily Mail, Arteta reportedly considers the Arsenal job too good an opportunity to reject. Current caretaker manager Freddie Ljungberg has seen both his games in charge end in disappointing fashion and that is not ideal.
As a result of this, the board might be stepping up their efforts to get someone into the club on a more permanent basis. And given the fact that they have already interviewed Arteta, it would make sense to go back to the candidate that they initially thought of hiring.
Though the report further suggests that there are other names in the mix such as former Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri and recently sacked Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, Arteta is considered to be a serious candidate.
He knows the club inside and out having spent the last five years of his career at the Emirates as he retired at the end of the 2015/16 season. Arteta was instrumental in making the club win trophies as he proved to be a highly dependable presence in the middle of the park.
The board need to find a solution to stop the rut that the Gunners are in at the moment. Arteta will be well received at the club given the amount of respect fans had for him during his time as a player.
He has shown during his stint at City that he has a good tactical mind as can be seen by the way Guardiola praises him. The Gunners need a rallying factor at the moment and there is every reason to believe that Arteta could be the man to do just that.
