According to O JOGO, Gunners have made inquiries for Benefica’s young striker Diogo Goncalves.
Arsenal have been looking at the forward for “many months”, as former Arsenal striker Luis Boa Morte has been to see the player repeatedly in action. This weekend, Boa Morte was again in the stands as Benfica B drew 1-1 with Gil Vicente.
Arsenal scout Gilles Grimandi has also reportedly watched Goncalves in action at the U19 European Championships over the summer.
Goncalves, who played in the no.10 role at the European under 19s Championship this summer, was voted in the tournament’s ‘Ten To Watch’ and helped Portugal to the semi-finals.
The attacker is yet to make his debut for the Portugal first team or feature for Benfica’s senior team but Goncalves has caught the eye of Arsenal during games for Benfica B.
In 48 appearances for Benfica’s second team he has scored seven goals and assisted three playing at different position throughout the season.
Benfica are aware of Arsenal’s interest, but are not entertaining any offers for the teen this month. Wenger has always been on the look-out for new young talent and Arsenal usually push their scouts out all over the place, so a deal for the starlet could be entirely possible.
However, The Londoners are happy to monitor Diego’s development over the coming season. The young attacker would likely join the club’s youth team if they do decide to bring him to London.
Wenger is under pressure to spend in the final days of the transfer window and with the deals for Shkodran Mustafi and Lacazette failing, Wenger is back to spotting young talents and doing what he does. Gooners around the world will not be happy but there is still time in the transfer market. Let us hope Arsenal sign someone before the transfer window shuts.
