Freiburg centre-back Çağlar Söyüncü has confirmed that Arsenal are interested in acquiring his services during the summer.
The north London have been tracking the Turk’s progress over the past six months and they are now said to be considering an approach for his signature.
In a report covered by Onefootball, the centre-back admitted that there is indeed interest from the Gunners, but a transfer has yet to be finalised between both clubs.
The 22-year-old added that talks are likely to be held after June 5 when he will be allowed to leave the Turkey camp for the season break. He said:
“Arsenal are one of the most important clubs in England. I know they’re interested in me, but there’s nothing finalised yet about my transfer,” Söyüncü told members of the Turkish media.
“After the national team camp we’ll have talks.”
Söyüncü has been watched by head of recruitment Sven Mislintat since the turn of the year and the Turk appears to have impressed with the aggressive nature of his game.
Often likened to Bayern’s Mats Hummels, Söyüncü is regarded as a ball-playing centre-back who is comfortable making long-passes with either feet.
Originally a right-footed defender, the Turk has worked countless hours to develop his skills with his weaker foot and besides this, he is not scared of making interceptions further up the field.
The positioning has been one concern due to his style of play but this could be resolved as he progresses further in his professional career.
With Laurent Koscielny sidelined for the long-term, Arsenal appear to be hunt for at least two central defenders and Söyüncü could be one of those making the switch next season.
Aside from Söyüncü, Arsenal are also said to have made contact with the representative of Sokratis from Borussia Dortmund, though a deal has yet to be finalised.
Söyüncü, who has already represented Turkey at the international level, is currently rated at around €35m. He has two years on his existing deal with Freiburg.
