By this point, Arsenal fans will be very happy and relieved to see Lucas Torreira being confirmed to have signed for the club.
There is good news in that regard after Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth confirmed that the player will be joining the club. He said:
“Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira, currently with Uruguay at the World Cup, will be on his way to the Emirates.
“Sampdoria president has actually said he has left for 30 million euros. There was a 25 million euro release clause with Torreira but their negotiations centered on trying to pay a bit more – and people will think why are they doing that? – but in installments, three 10 million euro installments.”
This confirms what the president of Sampdoria Massimo Ferrero had said earlier regarding the deal. He said:
“Torreira has left for €30million, I bought him from Pescara when nobody believed in him. We took a gamble on him and we won, paying just €3million. The money that comes in will be used to capitalise the company.”
It is also believed that the signing of Torreira has played a part in the departure of long-time Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere. Sheth also touched upon this and said:
“We were told last week there was a contract offer on the table from Arsenal but judging by his statement the decision has been made by Jack Wilshere after talks with Unai Emery. He has decided playing time is the reason. He’s going to get more playing time elsewhere than perhaps he was going to get at Arsenal following these talks with Emery.
While all the signs have been positive so far, it is better to wait for any sort of official confirmation and given that Uruguay are still active at the World Cup, that is sure to be delayed.
He has appeared as a substitute in both the matches that Uruguay have played so far against Egypt and Saudi Arabia. In the short time that he has been on the pitch, he has shown glimpses of his talent that Arsenal fans around the world will be itching to see on the Emirates pitch as well.
When the signing is made official, Torreira will be further proof of the restructuring that is going on at Arsenal under new manager Unai Emery. Two players have already been confirmed to join in the form of Stephan Lichsteiner from Juventus and Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen.
