Among the many names that have been making the rounds regarding the new Arsenal manager, one of them has been current Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone.
Despite the Spanish club not being in the best of form, it looks like the Argentine will not be making a move to the Emirates. Speaking after the game against Villarreal, he said(as per Metro):
“In the eight years that I have been here, it has been said that the group was not with me every year,’ said the 49-year-old.
“There is always a moment of speculation. However, we move forward with patience and lots of energy.”
Atletico have won just one of their last seven games and that run of form had led to reports that he might be moving on from the Spanish club. But these comments make it clear that he is not looking to do that and would rather stay and rough it out.
Simeone has been one of the most successful coaches in the past decade as he has taken Atletico Madrid to glory in the Europa League as well as the La Liga. He has also reached two Champions League finals but they, unfortunately, ended in defeat.
The most impressive aspect of his time at Atletico has been the defensive solidity which has become a hallmark of their squad. If by some chance he was to join Arsenal, fans will be hoping that he will be able to bring that same level of solidity to the Emirates as well.
Right now, Arsenal have given club legend Freddie Ljungberg the position of the caretaker manager and his two games in charge have been disappointing. Simeone is a strong character that will surely able to galvanize the squad and bring some stability.
But as his comments suggest, getting him to London is going to be a big challenge. Ultimately, the Gunners might have to look elsewhere to find someone to replace the departed Unai Emery.
Arsenal are in the midst of a crisis right now and for the future of the club to be on the right track, a strong personality is required. Simeone is just the person for the job and if Arsenal can somehow get him, fans will be thrilled.
