Arsenal have tabled a £12m bid for Neven Subotic after reports suggested that the defender was given the go ahead to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, according to the report in German Express.
The Serbian international was once crowned the best defender in Germany and was a key player for Dortmund between 2008 and 2013 before a serious injury problem brough his career to a standstill.
Subotic has fallen out-of-favour, as he only made 6 Bundesliga appearance last season, and it was announced earlier this month that he is set to leave Dortmund in search for another club.
The reports from Bild claim that the 27-year-old ace is no longer training with the German team after the club agreed that he could speak with other clubs to secure a move with the likes of Sunderland and Middlesbrough among the clubs reported to be interested in his service.
The reports from the German newspaper claims that Liverpool are also interested in luring him to the Anfield with Jurgen Klopp looking to replace Martin Skrtel who has been linked with a move away from the Anfield Stadium, however, it was reported that Arsenal are in the driver’s seat after tabling a £12m offer for his signature.
Wenger’s main concern is to sign an elite striker but it seems he’s also looking to fill some space in defence as they need to sign a replacement for England defender Calum Chambers who is expected to be heading out on loan.
Seeing Wenger go after Subotic is a surprising move to me considering his lack of playing time over the past three years due to the serious injury crisis he has been battling with for years, but it will be a great signing for us if we finally lure him to the Emirates and get him back to the form he was five years ago.
However, acquiring a work permit could play spoilsport in any deal as the 27-year-old hasn’t played for his country since 2013, so even if a deal with Dortmund is finally agreed we will have some issues in signing him.
Personally, I have long been an admirer of Subotic and Wenger trying to get an experienced, brave, talented and hardworking defender will serve great purpose to Arsenal’s defence going in to next season.
