Arsenal’s legendary goalkeeper David Seaman believes his former side could have a great chance of securing the Europa League title, provided they managed to progress against AC Milan in the round of 16 of the competitions.
The north Londoners have had a dismal run since December, and this has seen them fall 10 points adrift of a top-four spot which would assure them of Champions League football for next season.
As a result, winning the Europa League remains the Gunners’ biggest opportunity of making it to the elite competition, though Seaman predicts that it won’t be easy with the Rossoneri challenge this month.
He told The Mail: “I’ll tell you after the Milan game. If we can get through that, then we’ve got a great chance. But that will be a difficult game.
“We found out that if you can get a good run in the Europa League it’s not too bad. We’re a long way from that at the moment.
“We’re quite a few points away from fourth. I think that’s going to be out of our reach. So we need to have a great performance against Milan.”
The San Siro giants started the season in a relatively poor run of form which saw Vincenzo Montella sacked from the head coach role, but new boss Gennaro Gattuso has revived their spirits, and they are currently unbeaten since the turn of the year.
The Rossoneri have recently secured wins over both AS Roma and Lazio in the Serie A and the Italian Cup respectively, and the latter assured their spot in the final where they will host Juventus in May.
Should Arsenal find a way past Milan, there is still a lengthy stride to the Europa League final at the Groupama Stadium with Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Rb Leipzig among the other clubs, who could potentially give a hamper blow to the club’s Champions League hopes.
