Roma manager Luciano Spalletti has confirmed that they are working on a deal with Arsenal as they attempt to bring Wojciech Szczesny back to the club, according to reports in the Evening Standard.
The 26-year-old joined the Italian club on a season-long loan deal last summer after falling down the pecking order at the Emirates with Petr Cech’s arrival.
The Poland international was seen as a future star at Arsenal until a horrendous 2014-15 campaign when he struggled for form and was also caught smoking in the shower. His form with the Italian also hasn’t been bright.
Roma recently brought Brazilian international Alisson and Szczesny was expected to return to the North London club.
However, Spalletti is hoping to bring the Polish star back to the Stadio Olimpico in a bid to strengthen in that position ahead of the new season. According to Evening Standard, he said:
“Both the goalkeepers [Alisson and Lobont] are strong, but we still don’t have Szczesny,” Spalletti told reporters.
“We have two strong goalkeepers, so we’ll see their reaction but that’s always an advantage. We’re working on Szczesny, for now we have Lobont.”
It is such a hard sight for the fans to see a young prospect leave on loan because of a foolish mistake. Not to forget, he shared the Golden Glove with new signing Petr Cech in the 2013/14 season.
There was never an issue with his talent but it’s his off-field activities that have often let him down. With Cech and Ospina competing we now have two keepers who will fight for the No.1 spot for at least few more years and with Martinez occupying the junior most position, there is hardly any room for Szczesny’s return.
So the only way back for Szczesny is if Ospina leaves the Gunners this summer, which I don’t think will happen this summer. It would take an excellent season in Italy for the Pole to have a chance of returning to London at least in the near future, else I don’t see him returning to the Emirates.
Will Szczesny ever return to the Emirates?
