There are some worrying reports doing the rounds in the media today suggesting that Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla in the summer. All the major media houses have picked up the story which originated from the very reliable Spanish journalist Guillem Balague.
The Spaniard has been in and out of the side at the start of the season owing to the lack of consistency, but the play-maker has been excellent since. His contributions have helped Arsenal pull through in some tough games and the midfielder has also played a crucial part in keeping the offence going in the absence of key man Alexis Sanchez.
His most recent performance against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup is one of the examples of the effect he has on this Arsenal side. He was involved in almost all of the Gunners attack over the weekend providing some much needed cutting edge with his quick passing.
There are some obvious reasons as to why Cazorla would want to make, as he might prefer to end his career in his home country where he has played his whole career expect for the three and half years with the Gunners. He will have one year left on his current contract in the summer, so if Atletico come calling Arsenal will have a decision to make but will they sell?
He is now 30 years old, so even if the club are thinking of an extension it will be a short term one considering the club’s recent policy of awarding short contracts to the players in their 30’s. It means the player might opt for a move away to a club where he can secure his long term future which Madrid are likely to offer.
I still consider him a little magician, so it would be great if we can keep him at the club for few more years as he still in his prime. However if Cazorla decides to move then we need not worry as we have enough talent in the midfield to cope with out him.
Will Cazorla leave in the summer?
