According to French outlet Jeunes Footeux, Arsenal are considering tabling an improved contract offer to Alexandre Lacazette.
The Gunners leapfrogged Manchester United into fourth place after their 3-2 win over Watford at Vicarage Road on Sunday afternoon. With another confident display, they have now stretched their winning run to four games.
Martin Odegaard gave the visitors an early lead. He combined beautifully with Bukayo Saka on the right flank before striking the ball into the bottom corner. Watford equalized with a stunning overhead kick from Cucho Hernandez, but Saka restored the Gunners’ lead at the half-hour mark.
It did not take long for the north Londoners to extend their lead. Gabriel Martinelli fired the ball into the top corner past a helpless Ben Foster. Moussa Sissoko did pull one goal back during the dying stages of the game, but that was nothing more than a consolation.
Lacazette was instrumental in setting up two goals and his ability to shield the ball came in handy while assisting them, with Mikel Arteta labelling him as phenomenal after the game. He has assisted seven times in his last nine League appearances. However, the Frenchman only has a few months left on his contract.
As per a report in Jeunes Footeux, Lacazette’s return to the frontline has convinced Mikel Arteta of his capabilities. The Gunners will now table a new contract offer that is expected to be better financially and longer than the offer tabled back in December.
Arsenal Fever View:
Although the France international doesn’t score enough goals, he is a great squad player. He has plenty of Premier League experience, which can be valuable for a young Arsenal squad. Since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s exit from the club, he has filled in the captaincy role swiftly.
Keeping Lacazette on a one-year deal would be a sensible decision. But, offering him a longer contract could be a gamble. At 30 years of age, he looks past his prime, and it is high time the Gunners reinforce their striking department.
At the moment it looks as if Eddie Nketiah and Lacazette are on their way out, which could leave Arteta dreadfully short of options up front. Considering Lacazette’s experience and role in the squad, keeping him for another year would be a rational decision.
