Arsenal have reportedly identified Aaron Ramsdale as the number one choice if they are to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, as per Scottish journalist Peter O’Rourke.
Despite producing efficient performances in the previous two Premier League seasons, the 23-year-old had to endure back-to-back relegations with Bournemouth and Sheffield United.
Following a productive season with the Blades last term, the goalkeeper was rewarded with a call-up to the England national squad for the Euro 2020. He remained an unused substitute throughout the competition.
Speaking on The Football Terrace’s The Done Deal Show, the journalist claimed that the Gunners’ goalkeeping coach is pushing the club to sign Ramsdale and the 23-year-old is the Emirates club’s primary target if they are to sign a new goalie this summer.
O’Rourke further stated that the Blades are holding on to a £40m asking price for their asset, despite being relegated from the top-flight. The journalist also said that the mentioned fee is way too expensive for a player who has two consecutive relegations on his CV. The journalist said:
“Crazily enough, I’ve heard recently that Sheffield United are holding out for £40 million for Ramsdale, which seems quite high in the current market.
“Considering he’s a goalkeeper, who obviously is a good goalkeeper, but he’s had two relegations on his CV in the last two seasons, at Bournemouth and Sheffield United. Arsenal’s goalkeeping coach is still pushing for this deal, he says Ramsdale is the number-one choice if they are to bring in a goalkeeper.”
Arsenal Fever View:
Following an error-prone season from Brand Leno, signing a new goalkeeper to push the German for a first-team place is a shrewd decision by Arsenal. However, there will be a question mark if Ramsdale is the right man for that role or not.
Signing a goalkeeper for £40m will be a big risk for the north London club. The Sheffield man is a very good shot-stopper which was visible in the last couple of seasons. However, in order to flourish in Mikel Arteta’s system, the Englishman has to be comfortable with the ball.
The 23-year-old lacks the ability to play out from the back and also lacks composure on the ball. Ramsdale is an old-fashioned goalkeeper who does not like to play with his feet and has the tendency to launch the ball into opposition territory under pressure.
Signing a new goalkeeper will be a very good addition for Arsenal, however, Ramsdale might not be the right choice. Leno’s recent form has forced the north London club to search for a new goalkeeper this summer. But, the Sheffield man will be way too expensive for what he has showcased so far in the Premier League.
