Former Arsenal numero-uno Wojciech Szczesny, who is currently on loan at Roma in Italy, has thrown down the gauntlet as regards his future in the summer.
His current loan spell at Roma is the second in consecutive seasons and is set to expire in June 2017.
Unlike the expected outcome at the end of loan spells such as his, its end, in this case, will define where his future lies.
From the admission that his future depends on Arsene Wenger and Arsenal, the Polish international has made his ambitions clear that in case the Gunners cannot offer him more game time, then he’s off.
Here is the response he provided when quizzed about his future:
It depends on Wenger and Arsenal
He made the above statement in a pre-match interview with Sky Sports before the Udinese game which they won by the way in January. However, after 7 clean sheets and just 2 losses since the turn of the new year 2017, the 26-year-old shot-stopper seems very much in control of his life and future. According to
However, after 7 clean sheets and just 2 losses since the turn of the new year 2017, the 26-year-old shot-stopper seems very much in control of his life and future.
According to reports in Polish news outlet przegladsportowy(as per Daily Star), his future will be determined based on the availability of him being the first choice goalkeeper.
Below are some quotes from the interview:
“London is still my home. I play for Roma, but I don’t stop supporting Arsenal.
“I watch their matches again, sometimes with joy. I do not know how my future will look like
“The future will be in my hands. I do not wonder what will happen in June, just in Sunday’s meeting in Milan.”
“[On being linked with clubs across Europe]This is press speculation. I know one thing: the more I play, the more options will appear.
“I try to only do what belongs to me, and in the summer I will consider all the proposals.
“The summer will allow me to choose a club where I will be number one,” he said.
“I will do everything to play next season. Where? Time will tell.”
In layman’s terms, as long as Petr Cech remains between the poles, Wojciech Szczesny for all intents and purposes will not return to the Emirates.
Considering the only flaw he had at Arsenal was indiscipline and lack of complete concentration during some games, sticking with Cech in his twilight may be a bit risky.
His former lieutenant David Ospina has been pushing for that very number 1 spot with incredible displays this season in Cup matches barring the Bayern Munich first leg away at the Allianz Arena where he conceded on 5 occasions within the course of the game.
To make a choice on retaining his services will come at a price. Are they capable of paying that price or can they pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat remains to be seen.
In the meantime, rumors of Borrusia Dortmund, Napoli, and Juventus interested in securing his services on a permanent basis abound…..No pressure!
