Arsenal will retain their interest in defender Djibril Sidibe this summer with Monaco seemingly keen on cashing in on his signature.
The 24-year-old who signed for Monaco last summer for a fee of around €15 million, has been one of the many standout performers for the Principality outfit, who are currently leading the Ligue 1 standings while also making significant progress in the Champions League.
Premier League leaders Chelsea have been credited with an interest in the French full-back in recent weeks, but according to French publication L’Equipe, via Metro, the Gunners could revive their pursuit of the versatile star in the summer.
Arsene Wenger’s side had approached for Sidibe during the previous summer transfer window, but he opted to join Monaco instead from his former club Lille.
He has since hit great heights in the Monaco shirt, and his versatility to play on either side of the central defence is something which has kept the Gunners’ focus on his services.
L’Equipe reveals that the north London giants will be among the top contenders for the France international this summer as they seek to find a suitable competitor to Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs for the left-back position.
Both Monreal and Gibbs have struggled to make amends on the left side of the defence this campaign, and the latter could leave the Emirates this summer with his contract due to expire in a year’s time.
Sidibe is due to become a regular starter with Didier Deschamps Les Bleus’ with Patrice Evra no longer in the reckoning while Layvin Kurzawa could play backup to his compatriot for the left-back spot.
Arsenal are currently positioned sixth in the league standings with 50 points, and they will have to show a huge upturn in form in the remaining months in order to preserve the history of having finished in the top-four in every season under the Wenger era.
