Arsenal have received a boost in their pursuit of Emiliano Buendia as the Argentine is expected to leave Norwich this summer, as per The Athletic.
The 24-year-old playmaker has been an integral part of the Canaries’ promotion to the Premier League, scoring 15 goals and leading the division with 17 assists for Daniel Farke’s side.
Despite Norwich’s relegation last season, Buendia had caught the eye of major clubs around Europe and had been linked with a move away from Carrow Road with Arsenal amongst the clubs being linked.
The interest from various clubs reignited after the midfielder’s impressive championship campaign in which he was named Sky Bet Championship Player of the Season.
The report in The Athletic claims that Buendia and the club are in agreement that this summer is the right time for the player to take the next step in his career. However, interested parties must shell out over £40million to secure the playmaker’s signature.
Arsenal and Aston Villa have been known admirers of Buendia but The Athletic are also reporting that a ‘major continental outfit’ has registered their interest recently. With Norwich playing in the top division next season, the Canaries’ would hope to keep hold of the Argentine but should suitable bids arrive they will let him go.
Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu are said to be admirers of Buendia. However, the north London club’s interest could be dependent on Martin Odegaard’s future at Arsenal. With uncertainty surrounding the Norwegian’s presence at the club next season, the Gunners consider Buendia a feasible replacement.
When asked about Odegaard’s contract talks after the 2-0 win over Brighton, Arteta said
“We have a very clear and strong opinion on what we would like to do’ the Spaniard also added ‘He’s not our player. We will have discussions in the next few weeks.”
The midfield department has been a cause of concern for Arteta’s side as they have just scored seven Premier League goals this season.
Emile Smith Rowe has been a revelation in the midfield for the north Londoners but they would look to provide the young Englishman with some competition.
Signing Buendia also means it does not hinder the progress of the Hale End graduate as the Norwich man can play as a right winger will equal effect. It is worth noting that he managed 32 goal contributions in 39 games when he was deployed as a right winger.
If Arsenal manage to pull off this deal then they have got a real prospect on their hands. With the Emirates club lacking firepower in the heart of their midfield, the Argentine could provide just that for years to come.
