Arsenal have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Lucas Paqueta after Lyon transfer chief Bruno Cheyrou admitted that they need to sanction the sale of some players in the summer, as per Metro.
The former AC Milan star joined Lyon in 2020 and has been an integral part of the squad. He has amassed over 70 appearances in all competitions, directly contributing to 33 goals in the process.
The 20-year-old was included in Ligue 1’s Team of the Year after his debut season. He also has 33 international caps to his name for the Brazil national team and was part of their Copa America triumph in 2019.
Paqueta’s contract at the Groupama Stadium expires in 2025. Amidst the club’s financial difficulties, their transfer chief has dropped a hint about the sale of some players this summer.
Cheyrou admitted the squad needs trimming. He insists that the economics of the deal will play a role in influencing their transfer decisions. As quoted by Metro, he said:
“We need to reduce the squad size. In terms of departures, we will analyze offers on a case-by-case basis but the economics will come into consideration.”
“We will consider the offers with [owner] Jean-Michel Aulas and [technical director] Vincent Ponsot in order to make the best decisions. I am here to ensure the best team possible, but there are other things to take into account as well.”
Arsenal Fever View:
The Brazilian is a player with huge potential, having showcased his talent for both club and country. He is capable of playing as a deep-lying playmaker, who has an instinct to make killer passes. Signing him will certainly reinforce Arsenal’s midfield department.
However, Paqueta is valued at around £60m. It is unlikely that the north Londoners would be willing to pay anywhere close to that figure. With plenty of options in the middle of the park, it is only sensible to proceed with the deal if they can negotiate a lower transfer fee.
Meanwhile, the Gunners have had a fantastic pre-season so far. They will be determined to carry this form to the Premier League, which will kickstart in less than ten days.
