Arsenal will reportedly begin contract negotiations with Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey as they look to avoid a similar situation to Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. The Wales international currently has two years left on his previous deal, and the club are hoping to tie him to a new contract at the earliest opportunity.
Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere are some of the key players, who are entering the final year of their respective contracts, and the club are hoping to avoid a repeat of this instance, according to The Mail.
The club’s hierarchy have recruited a new administrator in Huss Fahmy, formerly of Team Sky, who will be in charge of renewing players’ contracts, and his first job will be to resolve the status of Ramsey.
Ramsey, who currently earns £100,000-a-week has netted the winners during the 2014 and 2017 FA Cup triumphs, regained some of his best form in the backend of last season after he was offered a somewhat free role in the 3-4-2-1 formation.
Despite his recurring calf problems, the 26-year-old remains a key player under manager Arsene Wenger, who will hope to have the midfielder in fine condition ahead of a potential title challenge next term.
Ramsey received strong criticism for his poor man-marking during the Gunners’ 3-1 defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion, but he has therein managed to revive his old self while bagging a couple of goals towards the end of the season.
Playing for Wales, Ramsey has always found an X-factor to his game, and his new role at the Emirates could enhance his chances of repeating a similar showing to that of the 2013/14 season, where he notched 16 goals in all competitions.
