According to reports in Football.London, Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is reportedly closing in on a move to Fiorentina.
The 25-year-old joined the north London club back in 2018 from Sampdoria. The midfielder had a productive first season under former boss Unai Emery. However, since Mikel Arteta was appointed the new manager, the Uruguay international has found it difficult to break into the starting eleven.
Football.London are claiming that Torreira initially wanted to fight for a starting spot at the Emirates Stadium, but the midfielder doesn’t feature in Arteta’s plan for this season. The Uruguayan is keen on returning to Italy where he enjoyed the best time of his career and Fiorentina are looking the most likely destination.
The report further claims that the deal could be an initial loan move with an obligation to buy at the end of the loan spell and the player will be traveling tomorrow to complete the transfer move. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio previously reported that Eintracht Frankfurt made a last-ditch attempt to sign the midfielder, however, the Uruguayan only wants to return to Serie A.
Arsenal Fever View:
Cashing in on Torreira seems to be the right decision from Arsenal but keeping the player wouldn’t have done any harm except for the aspect of wages.
The Gunners are short in midfield and the 25-year-old would have been a good alternative to have. The midfielder’s dynamism and energy could have been extremely useful for the Emirates club in pressing and keeping up the tempo of the game.
Arteta likes to implement high-pressing, free-flowing football. However, against stronger opposition, it is extremely difficult to succeed with this expansive brand of football. This was apparent against Chelsea during the weekend. So, keeping a player like the Uruguayan will be extremely useful as he could break up the opposition’s rhythm with his agility and dynamism.
Meanwhile, after back-to-back defeats in the first two games of the season, the fixture will not be getting any easier for the north London club as they will encounter Manchester City next Saturday.
