Arsenal have moved ahead of Manchester United by submitting an improved offer for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez, as per De Telegraaf(via Metro).
The Argentinian is known for his versatility, being able to play as a centre-back, full-back as well as a defensive midfielder. The 24-year-old became an important part of Erik ten Hag’s Ajax side as they won the Eredivisie last season.
De Telegraaf states that the Gunners are back with a better offer after their initial attempt of £25m was rejected by the Dutch giants. Now, the new bid is said to be around £34.4m with certain add-ons to be included.
Though the Amsterdam club are yet to respond to this new offer, they are looking for something in the range of £43m. And it is reported that they have started to plan for next season without the Argentina international.
De Telegraaf also state that there is interest in the defender from Manchester United. But the Red Devils have let the north Londoners move ahead as they are focused on a deal for Frenkie de Jong.
Arsenal Fever View:
A lack of depth has been a common feature at the Emirates for some time now and that reared its head at the most unfortunate moments. Last season, losing both Kieran Tierney and Thomas Partey at an important point in the campaign eventually led to the club finishing outside the top four.
The proposed signing of Martinez is an indication that the Gunners are looking to learn from their mistakes. By bringing in a player that can play multiple positions, it ensures that there won’t be a significant drop in quality when someone is absent.
Though the new offer from the north Londoners is not up to what Ajax are looking for, a deal does not seem to be far away. With Mikel Arteta looking to get back into the top four, having a strong squad is essential.
Arsenal are doing their best to ensure that the team is strong enough to take on the challenges that await them next season. Bringing in a player such as Martinez is a sure indication that the squad depth is being changed for the better.
