Arsenal are said to have lodged a formal bid to secure the services of defender Walter Kannemann from Gremio this summer.
The north London side ended the league campaign on a disappointing note as they missed out on the top four but they can still make the Champions League by winning the Europa League crown at the end of the month.
Irrespective of this, the Gunners are likely to look into potential signings to strengthen the squad, and the central defensive department could be the focus of attention with more than 50 goals leaked for the second-straight league campaign.
According to Calciomercato, the north London side are looking into a move for 28-year-old Kannemann, who is currently plying his trade with Gremio in the Brazilian top-flight.
Inter Milan and Sampdoria are also said to hold an interest in the centre-back, but the Gunners seem to hold the edge after making a formal offer worth £10.5m (€12m) to land his signature.
The speculation has certainly come out of the blue, but the mentioned transfer value seems to go with the club’s restricted budget for the summer transfer window.
Kannemann has already represented Argentina on five occasions since making his debut last year, and as per whoscored, tackling has been identified as his strong hold.
Arsenal are currently with just three fit centre-backs in the form of Laurent Koscielny, Sokratis and Shkodran Mustafi but the latter has come for plenty of criticism for his inconsistent performances.
Rob Holding would undoubtedly add more steel to the defence on his injury comeback, but there remains the necessity for fresh faces, who can help the club regularly shutdown the opposition.
