Arsenal have ‘pretty much’ agreed a transfer deal to sign American goalkeeper Matt Turner, as per journalist Chris Wheatley.
The 27-year-old who plays for New England Revolution in Major League Soccer has grown into one of the best in his position. A series of good performances have made him the number one choice at both club and country.
Speaking to Gunners fan Bhavss14’s YouTube channel, Wheatley had this to say about Turner:
“Matt Turner is being the subject of a £5 million bid from Arsenal and he’s a player they’d like to get in this month.
“The player certainly wants to come to Arsenal. Bernd Leno really wants to leave to play regular first-team football. Turner deal is pretty much all agreed in terms of the player’s side, it’s just the two clubs that need to agree on the formalities of the deal. I expect Turner to come in.”
The journalist also went on to add that it isn’t exactly known where Leno is going to end up but there is interest from Newcastle United. The German wants to make a move this month as he is eyeing the 2022 FIFA World Cup and wants to be in coach Hansi Flick’s plans.
Arsenal Fever View:
Since arriving in 2018, Leno has been a great servant for the north Londoners and has kept the team afloat on numerous occasions. But since the signing of Aaron Ramsdale, it is clear that the German has become the second choice at the Emirates.
And given that there will only be League games from now on, the chances of the German playing again are minimal. It makes sense for the 29-year-old to look elsewhere to get regular game time.
What is encouraging is that the north Londoners have a plan in place for when the Germany international does leave. And based on what Wheatley is saying, a deal with New England should not be a problem.
It is good to see Arsenal work proactively in the transfer market and in Turner, they have chosen a classy option if Leno does leave. There is not much time left this month and any moves would have to happen quickly. If everything goes as predicted, we could be seeing an American keeper at the Emirates.
