Arsenal took on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday in what was supposed to be a must-win game for the Gunners to keep their title hopes alive.
The game ended 3-1 in favor of The Blues and lifted them 12 points clear atop the Premier League table standings.
Realistically speaking, there wasn’t much expectation much from the team as the psychological trauma of losing to Watford midweek was still lingering around.
Furthermore, the reality of not having Granit Xhaka, who could have marshaled our midfield and aided to exploit the pockets of space behind Chelsea’s wingbacks kept haunting the feeling of hopes of an Arsenal win.
Petr Cech didn’t do himself any favors with this game or with the fans as he carelessly gifted former Arsenal Captain Cesc Fabregas with Chelsea’s 3rd goal after miskicking the ball to him.
There had been calls from a section of the fans for Ospina to take the starting berth from him and this display, let’s just say armed their opinion.
The game left a few things to be pleased about, such as Welbeck’s display when he came on, Giroud’s goal, the final scoreline and one more game of Granit Xhaka’s ban.
It was a poor performance where the in-form team came in with more desire to win and we just appeared to make up the number of games played this season.
At this point as well, we can reasonably assume our title challenge is effectively over and begin to invest more time and resources in other directions such as The FA cup and Champions League.
Interestingly, though, Liverpool seem intent on not letting us walk alone as they went down to Hull City 2-0 later in the day.
To underestimate Hull will be folly. Hopefully, we can begin to pick ourselves up before our February aligns with history.
