Lazio have opened talks to sign Lucas Torreira and a swap deal for Joaquin Correa could be on the cards as per reports in Sky Italy. Some fans have reacted ecstatically to this news on Twitter.
The midfielder was signed by the Gunners back in 2018. He had an excellent start to life in north London, featuring in 50 games across all competitions in his debut season. However, things have gone downhill since.
The 25-year-old was sent out on loan to Atletico Madrid but the midfielder was not a regular starter at the Wanda Metropolitano, starting just three league games for the Spanish giants. After a difficult loan spell, he has returned to Arsenal with a host of clubs interested in signing him.
According to Sky Italy, Lazio are keen on signing Torreira and have already opened talks with the player’s agent. A formal negotiation has not begun yet but they are confident of landing the former Sampdoria player. The report also suggests that the Gunners could ask them to include Correa in a swap deal.
Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri is reportedly a huge admirer of Torreira and the Uruguayan is top of his shopping list at Lazio. The Emirates club lodged an opening bid of €20m for Correa last week but that was turned down by the Biancocelesti as they value him around €35m, a sum the North Londoners are reluctant to pay. Therefore a swap deal would make complete sense for both parties involved.

Arsenal Fever View:
With Arsenal in the market for several midfielders, it is pretty evident that Torreira is not part of the manager’s plans for next season. Mikel Arteta did start him regularly in the initial stages but injuries haven’t helped the 25-year-old’s cause. Many clubs have registered their interests but Italy seems to be a likely destination for him.
The north Londoners are set to undergo a squad overhaul this summer and they will be looking to generate a significant amount of funds through player sales. The Uruguay international seems to be one of the players on the chopping blocks.
Correa ticks all the boxes for Arsenal as he can play as a forward as well as a winger with equal effect. The 26-year-old is valued more than the Arsenal star, therefore the Italian club would still be asking for a fee on top of the swap deal.
