Arsenal are set to face defeat in the pursuit of long-term target and Wolfsburg midfielder Julian Draxler. The German international has highlighted his intention to join Paris Saint-Germain during the winter transfer window.
Draxler, 23, has been the subject of transfer speculation this month following the Wolves’ decision to offload their asset despite their poor run in the Bundesliga.
According to TalkSPORT, the World Cup winner is said to have communicated with national teammate Kevin Trapp, who is currently the back-up goalkeeper at Paris Saint-Germain.
The report adds that the young attacker would favour a switch to Les Parisiens over the Gunners given the less competition for places at Parc des Princes.
Arsene Wenger’s side have been strongly linked with a move for Draxler this month with Mesut Ozil having urged the club’s hierarchy to sign his counterpart in a deal which could see him commit his future to the Gunners.
Ozil has just 18 months left on his present Gunners contract, and the failure to sign Draxler could be a bitter blow to their hopes of securing the 28-year-old on a long-term basis.
The Gunners have held a long-standing interest in Draxler since his time at Schalke 04, and it seems that they may once again face defeat with the German unwilling to compete for places under Wenger.
Draxler, who is mainly a left winger by trade, has appeared in over 40 times for Wolfsburg since arriving from Schalke 04 last season. He is also a regular with his national side having earned 27 caps till date.
He is versatile enough to play on the wings or in the centre, so he could slot in alongside Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. The German would likely jump at the chance to join the Gunners in January or next summer, and could be a viable option to replace Cazorla in the long-term.
