Arsenal have reportedly earmarked Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez as a potential replacement for Alexis Sanchez at the end of the campaign.
The Chile international has had a top season with the Gunners this term, and his tally of 19 goals in the top flight have kept the club in a respectable position as they head into the final games of the season.
According to The Star, the Gunners are plotting a move for Colombian ace Rodriguez, who could replace Sanchez at the Emirates next term.
Sanchez, 28, has just over a year left on his present deal, and he is stalling on a fresh contract with the Gunners far from guaranteed a place in next season’s Champions League.
Rodriguez, who is in his third season at the Bernabeu, has often found himself frustrated with the lack of gametime under Zinedine Zidane, and he could be available for a £50m sum during the coming transfer window.
The likes of Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain also hold an interest in the attacker, but the Gunners could seek to utilise their previous association in order to lure the player from the European champions.
The FA Cup finalists had tried to pursue the Colombian during his time at Porto and AS Monaco, and the north London club could be third time lucky in the pursuit of the versatile ace.
Despite his restricted playing time, Rodriguez has notched 11 goals and as many assists across all competitions for Los Blancos this season.
The Gunners will seek to make a late push for a Champions League qualification spot after they earned a well deserved 2-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.
Arsenal are currently six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City as they head into the final four games of the league campaign. Next up, is a trip to Southampton, where they have struggled to attain three points in recent times.
