Arsenal are reportedly growing confident that Granit Xhaka will sign a new contract soon, as per Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The midfielder was heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium this summer. AS Roma’s incoming manager Jose Mourinho was keen on signing the Switzerland international. However, the Giallorossi failed to match the north London club’s asking price and the two clubs never reached an agreement.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano reported that the Gunners are feeling confident of tying the midfielder down to a long-term contract. Both parties have already agreed on a four-year extension with a salary increment.
The journalist further claimed that the deal is now in the final stages and could get finalized in the next few days. He said:
Arsenal are confident to have Granit Xhaka new contract signed ‘very soon’. Agreement reached until June 2025, increased salary and player prepared to accept. Final clauses to be fixed and then it’ll be official. AFC Xhaka will be Arsenal captain tonight, club announced.

Arsenal Fever View:
The contract extension will split opinion among Arsenal fans, as Xhaka has showcased his prowess with the north London club but failed to contribute on a consistent basis.
Tying the Swiss down in a long-term contract will help Mikel Arteta in addressing other areas of the pitch this summer. The Gunners are a little thin in midfield and selling the 28-year-old would have forced the club to put a bigger hole in their transfer budget in pursuit of a replacement.
The midfielder’s experience and leadership qualities will help the Gunners’ young squad to flourish. New signing Sambi Lokonga has shown glimpses in the previous game against Brentford and could develop under Xhaka’s tutelage. However, Xhaka’s disciplinary record has been the downside of his game.
Following a disappointing defeat against Brentford, questions have already been raised about Arteta. The Spanish boss needs reinforcements as soon as possible to string some positive results. Otherwise, it could be yet another long and painful season for the Emirates club.
