Arsenal are reportedly on the cusp of announcing their first summer signing with 21-year-old goalkeeper Markus Schubert tipped to join on a free transfer.
The youngster has spent his entire career with German second-tier club Dynamo Dresden but he has now been given the luxury of choosing his next club with his contract due to expire at the end of the month.
According to The Independent, the north London giants are close to wrapping up the signature of Schubert, who is regarded as one of the best young keepers in Europe.
The same publication claims that the keeper has been earmarked as a long-term understudy for Leno, although he could be shipped out on loan to a Championship outfit next term.
Arsenal are set to part ways with Petr Cech at the end of the month after his retirement decision and there has been a question mark as to who could replace the Czech for the backup role.
Both David Ospina and Emiliano Martinez seem the viable choices available to the Gunners and the former could yet return to the Emirates, should Napoli decline to take up the buy option.
As such, everything seems sorted when it comes to the deputy goalkeeping role and hopefully, the club can now seek to strengthen the backline which remains the prime weakness.
Sampdoria’s Joachim Andersen has been identified as the leading target to strengthen the central defence but so far, the club have not been able to strike a deal with the Serie A outfit.
The Gunners are said to be plotting a double deal with Sampdoria involving midfielder Dennis Praet, but they are yet to match the £49m valuation from the Genoa-based club.
